31Nushima Island
One of the legendary sites associated with Onokoro Island, as recounted in the Kuniumi Story. This small island juts above the sea on the Pacific Ocean side of Awaji Island and, when seen from above, resembles a comma-shaped bead. Of particular interest are the island’s kofun (tumulus) and salt-manufacturing ruins, as well as the large, intriguingly shaped rocks surrounding it, most notably the Kamitategami-iwa Rock. One explanation for “Nushima Island” is that it derives from the “Nuboko” (Heavenly Spear) of the Kuniumi Story.
