The Naruto Strait is about 1.3 km wide between Awaji and Shikoku Islands. A special feature of the strait is the world’s largest whirlpools created by the powerful tidal currents, something that would have required excellent seafaring skills of the Ama. Watching the whirlpools of Naruto Strait, one imagines the deities Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto churning the world below with the Ame-no-Nuboko (Heavenly Spear).
