26Kitan Strait, Yura & Narugashima Island
Yura and Narugashima Island functioned as a stronghold commanding the Kitan Strait, a strategically important area on the Seto Inland Sea. Yura is an excellent natural port that developed as a base for maritime transport and trade, and one can imagine the Ama who thrived in the area around the Kitan Strait. Also located here is Izushi Jinja Shinto Shrine, which is associated with the Izushi no Tosu (Izushi’s Knife), brought by Ame-no-Hiboko-no-Mikoto, a prince of Silla, as mentioned in the Kojiki (the oldest historical record of Japan) and the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan).
