25Akashi Strait and Matsuho-no-ura Bay
Akashi Strait, which links the Harimanada Sea and Osaka Bay, is a perilous body of water in the Seto Inland Sea, known for its strong tidal currents. It is also a strategic maritime gateway to the territories around Kyoto and is where the Ama, with their superb seafaring skills, flourished. Matsuho-no-ura was used as a base for crossing the Akashi Strait, and the Ama, who were making salt here, are depicted in the Manyoshu (Collection of Ancient Japanese Poetry).
