21Izanagi-jingu Shinto Shrine
Said to be the oldest Shinto Shrine in Japan, enshrining the deities Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto, who feature in the Kuniumi Story (Japan’s creation myth). This Shinto Shrine is the legendary site of the dwelling of Izanagi-no-Mikoto, who accomplished all the godly feats beginning with the creation of Japan. The shrine welcomes visitors with an atmosphere of profound sanctity. In 2004, nine statues of deities were newly discovered, all depicting Izanami-no-Mikoto and believed to date from the Heian to the Kamakura periods (794-1333).
