16Kifune Jinja Archeological Site
This is a salt production site located in Nojima-no-Ura, dating from the Kofun period to the Nara period (the 3rd to 8th centuries). Stone-lined hearths with better thermal efficiency were discovered here, and it is thought that salt produced in large volumes was supplied to the sovereign. The site is believed to have been a base for the activities of the Nojima no Ama, who are mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan), and today visitors can see their livelihood, salt-making with earthenware, depicted in statues.
