12Oki-no-shima Kofun Group and Stone Rods

A cluster of kofun (tumulus) that extends across a small island overlooking the Naruto Strait. Numerous small-scale stone chambers were built here by piling up unworked rocks and are thought to be the tombs of Ama chieftains given that fishing implements predominate among the burial goods. Chlorite-schist, characteristic of Nushima Island, was used for the stone rods, which shows the involvement of the Ama, whose livelihood was the sea.
