11Shimonaizen Archeological Site

A major Yayoi-period settlement located in the center of Awaji Island. Pottery discovered here comes from Kawachi (present-day eastern area of Osaka Prefecture), Izumi (present-day southern Osaka Prefecture), and Kii (present-day Wakayama Prefecture and southern Mie Prefecture), indicating extensive exchange with other regions. It also points to the presence of the Umi-no-tami, who interacted with these regions across Osaka Bay.
