Naruto Strait is about 1.3 km across between Awaji Island and Shikoku. A special feature of the strait is the world’s largest whirling tides created by the powerful tidal currents, something that would have required excellent seafaring skills of the Ama. Watching the whirling tides of Naruto Strait, one imagines the Kamis Izanagi-no-mikoto and Izanami-no-mikoto churning the physical world with the Ame-no-nuboko (Holy spear）.
