Nushima Island

Kamitategami-iwa rock
One of the legendary Onokorojima Island places appearing in the Kuniumi Story . This small island juts above the sea on the Pacific Ocean side of Awaji Island, and when seen from above, appears in the form of a comma-shaped bead. Of particular interest are the island’s kofun (tumulus) and salt manufacture ruins, as well as the huge intriguingly shaped rocks surrounding it, most notably the Kamitategami-iwa rock. One explanation for “Nushima Island” is that it comes from the “nuboko” (holy spear) of the Kuniumi Story .
