Senzan Senkoji Temple

Senzan Senkoji Temple
The mountain here is said to be the first mountain created by the Kamis Izanagi-no-mikoto and Izanami-no-mikoto, so it is called Senzan. Senkoji Temple was built at the top of Mt. Senzan and just below it is Iwato Jinja Shinto Shrine, which enshrines Amaterasu-Omikami (the Sun Kami), who hid her form in the Ama-no-Iwato (Cave of the Sun Kami). This place deep in the forest is closely connected with the Kuniumi Story (Japan’s Creation Myth).
