Yamato Okunitama Jinja Shinto Shrine

Yamato Okunitama Jinja Shinto Shrine: Front torii gate
This shrine is connected with the Yamato clan, who are thought to have commanded the “Mihara-no-Ama”, as mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan), and is called Awajikoku Ninomiya (Second Shrine of the Awaji Domain). The Yamato Jinja Shinto Shrine seal (Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property) was unearthed in the shrine grounds. Story has it that in ancient times the shrine hall faced west and the Seto Inland Sea, but the boatmen plying the waters failed to worship there, which was met with divine punishment, so the shrine hall was turned to face southward.
