Hikino Archeological Site

Hikino salt-making kiln
A site where the Ama pursued their livelihood of making salt, around the middle of the Kofun period. The artifacts unearthed allow us to follow the development from salt-making earthenware with a supporting base, to round-bottomed salt-making earthenware with better thermal efficiency. We can therefore picture the beginning of the salt-making that supported the sovereign with mass production using improved earthenware.
