Kifune Jinja Archeological Site – Depiction of earthenware salt-making by the Ama
This is a salt manufacture ruins located in Nojima-no-Ura, from the Kofun period to the Nara period. Stone kilns with good thermal efficiency were discovered here, and it is thought that salt produced in large volumes was supplied to the sovereign. The site is believed to have been a base for the activities of the Nojima-no-Ama, who are mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan), and today visitors can see their livelihood, salt-making with earthenware, depicted in statues.
